SLOs Introduction at MERA Spring 2015

An introduction was given around Student Learning Objectives on Friday, May 8, at the spring MERA Conference in Lansing.  Although Student Growth Percentiles (SGPs) will replace other measures for growth data at the state level, legislation calls for a portion of the educator evaluation to be based on local assessment data as well.  In addition to HOW educator use data to drive instruction, SLOs provide the framework for submitting rigorous yet attainable goals for both core and non-core teacers based on local assessment data.

Here are some resources to explore:
  • View the Teacher Voices of RI on the SLO Intro page
  • Understand the SLOs constitute a process that leads to a product by reviewing the SLO Cycle page and/or the AIR SLO Basics.
  • Examine each of the six components of the SLO by viewing the SLO Template w/ support links as featured on the SLO Writing Guidance page.  Included on the page is a Sample SLO 5th Grade Math and numerous samples from other states such as Rhode Island (teachers, admin and support SLOs), Louisiana (SLTs), Ohio (core and non-core) and New York (3 years of SLOs).
This "simple" process is NOT easy and will take time and training.  However, the SLO process is one that 38 others states already have a head start on Michigan, so there is a wealth of information on the web (both good and not so good).
